The Opioid Crisis

Parnassus Investments addressed the crisis with Cardinal Health, Inc. and McKesson Corp., two of the largest drug distributors in the U.S.  Parnassus concluded that these two companies neglected their legal obligation to monitor controlled substance distribution and sold both holdings.  It kept CVS Health in its portfolio based on its positive steps to help stem the epidemic.

Data Security/Governance

Brown Investments bought Facebook in 2014.  In early 2018, Brown recognized several risks (governance, privacy & data security, and regulatory) and cut its position in half.  It has since sold Facebook due to its failure to address those risks.

Parnassus Investment proxy voted against ratifying executive compensation where there was a misalignment between executive pay and company performance.  Examples:  Allergan, Disney, Hologic, Qualcomm.

Consumer Privacy/Safety

Calvert Investment excludes the following companies from its U.S. Large Cap Core Responsible Index Fund due to material business risks; Facebook, Berkshire Hathaway, Johnson & Johnson, Boeing Company, Walmart, Inc.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Etho Capital’s Climate Leadership Index U.S. claims an 85% reduction in total emissions from its fund holdings vs. The Standard and Poor’s 500 Index.

Environmental Solutions

Parnassus Investments engaged the Clorox Company to reduce its use of single use, plastic trash bags and add a sustainability expert to its board.  Clorox agreed to the engagement.
